Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Gottman Method Couples TherapyThe Gottman Method Couples therapy is a research based couples intervention by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. It is developed based on studying several hundred couples in numerous research studies across the life course. The findings have demonstrated the importance of fostering a friendship between partners, managing conflict in a relationship and supporting each other’s hopes and dreams.

The Gottman Method is a structured and goal focused therapy. Drs. John and Julie Gottman have identified areas in a relationship, referred to as the Sound relationship house that contribute to a healthy relationship and make a relationship thrive such as:

  • Building love maps by knowing your partner e.g., history, worries, stresses, joys, and hopes
  • Sharing fondness and admiration towards one another
  • Turning towards each other by creating moments of connection or brief exchanges during the day instead of turning away from each other
  • Creating a positive perspective of your partner (e.g., seeing your partner as a friend instead of an adversary)
  • Managing conflict
  • Making life dreams come true by creating an environment that supports each others hope and aspirations
  • Creating a shared meaning for life by understanding each other’s values, and goals for the relationship and life
  • Developing Trust
  • Commitment

The therapy process involves conducting a comprehensive assessment of the relationship. The Gottman Method provides couples with tools and strategies that address a wide range of issues in a relationship. Some of the areas covered in the therapy include (but are not limited to):

  • Improving communication
  • Recognizing criticism and defensive in the relationship
  • Learning how to process a disagreement
  • Enhancing trust
  • Problem solving
  • Effective conflict resolution
  • Identifying strengths in the relationship and how to build upon them further
  • Fostering respect and affection
  • Improving intimacy
